Hi Jerry:
Glad you asked this question but I am relatively new to researching and
there must be far better researchers among the "doctors"of oboe and bassoon
,etc on this List.
I was searching for music from the arrival of the Portuguese royal family in
Brazil.Went to the librarian and asked to see the archives and lo and
behold...Today I located via a colleague in Brazil,an "expert"on the subject
and e mailed him. Where is he?In Texas!!!
Also looked under oboe solo but also check flute because many these orks can
be adapted. Also looked under the composer's name.
Index file cards are from our aging generation ,Looked at these as well but
today everything--almost --is on line as well.Despite a shortage of funds
out here, there was a catalogue online.
In the past associated all this procedure as "boring, " time consuming,
taking me away from many so-called more important activities asc
practicing, composing, going swimming, etc. but now I see it as a great
adventure, equal to the ones I have experienced on real life voyages to new
countries and cultures.

Best wishes,

harold

Hello Harold

Just how do you go about discovering music works. Do you just go up to the
reference librarian and tell him/her what you are doing or is there more to
it? Do you go to public, private, university libraries or where? Do you
just rummage in the stacks? Do you find these things in the card file index
under "oboe solo"? Do you just look in the card file under the suspect
composer's name ? Jerry Cadwell
