There is a carbon fiber bocal for bassoon already and there is one made of
wood. Before I would spend a lot of money on variable materials, I would
wish for more consistency in the bore and wall thickness, irrespective of
the materials. I have played exceptional Fox bocals made of standard
materials and I have played lousy Heckel bocals made the same way. Every
now and the a real "gem" emerges, and I think sometimes it is a
serendipitous accident of manufacture.
I commend all these guys for their experimentation and I believe the
mysteries of the universe will ultimately yield to scientific research, but
there is not enough money, time, talent, effort spent on these parameters
because of a very small application for their findings.
These devices we use to make music are amazing, no?
