From: "HAROLD" <harold@-----.br> Subj: [DR-L] Playing oboe with Indians Date: Sat, 01 Dec 2007 05:01:48 -0500
Dear List:
I know this missive will probably result some wiseacre responding "can't
he write about something other than himself?"nevertheless must relate that
last night while other double reeders were playing at Carnegie Hall,Lincoln
Center ,Vienna,Sydney, eyc, this oboist, addicted e-mailer had the privilege
to perform (and dance?) with an Indian tribe.
I was participating in a program where a lovely singer celebrated "Brazilian
Folklore" and my part included "traditional" composers of this vast
continent:Guarnieri,Guerra Peixe,Siqueira among others.
At the end of the program a small group of shirtless and shoeless Indians
dressed in war paint and shaking their rattles (Chamakiri,Guajara and
Turui-Indio Apurina --Amazonon Indians) did their "act" dancing and chanting
in a circle.
Traditional"musicians, oboe, piano, bass drums and guitar ,we stood in the
backround watching until the bassist and pianist began to play. So,why not,
I joined in playing first my reed to the rattle sounds of the Indians and
then improvised at will even joining their line of dance playing my oboe in
the middle of the circle of dancing Indians.
(Some people never grow up!)
In any case,I hope to have the U-tube eventually to send out.
My query:has anyone out there in double reed cyber space-- who is still
growing up-- played his oboe or bassoon in a similar fashion with an Indian
tribe?.
Regards from a Lister who thought he had done almost everything in the
musical world,
Harold Emert
