La Paz, Bolivia, during Carnaval week this past February I played oboe
and my then-new quena (wooden flute) extemporaneously during several
indian festivities and ceremonies, as well as with some traditional,
loosely-organized street bands. I was not invited, but only welcomed
when I expressed my desire to participate. I guess I "danced" a little
too. I never thought of playing my reed.
Then in September, in southern Peru and northern Chile, while traveling
with my flamenco guitar-playing amigo, we had many opportunities to play
with local musicians and bands - some were indios. Usually we would
start playing somewhere, and then be joined by others who noticed us.
No dancing this trip though.
The oboe has proven to be a definite "party" instrument for travel.
It's always a great surprise, and it's great fun when someone living so
far from my home asks to hear a theme (movies and such) that they
remember hearing played by an oboe.
I don't know, Harold - I'm pretty growed up.
