From: morbassoon@-----.com Subj: [DR-L] Harold's Eulogy for Albert Goltzer Date: Wed, 14 Nov 2007 23:12:23 -0500
Dear Friends,
Indeed, Harold Emert's eulogy for Albert Goltzer was moving. I play
with his wife Doris at the NYC Opera, and had the pleasure of spending
some time with Al on several occasions. He was everything Harold
described and perhaps more. He had a bearing one thinks of in a strong,
silent leader; political, religious or otherwise. We will all miss him.
I must address the end of Harold's statement however, which I have
pasted below:
"My only regret is that --for a lack of self promotion and knowhow in
this field of politicking for honors--Al Goltzer, my teacher, never was
made an honorary member of the IDRS."
I realize Harold is emotional over the loss of someone dear to him, and
I know I have sometimes said things in a way I did not mean them. But,
I have served on several IDRS Honorary Membership Committees and must
respond to this statement. I cannot remember any individual promoting
him/herself for that honor. As with virtually everything to do with
IDRS, the rules and requirements are clear and transparent. Perhaps had
Al's students taken the initiative that others have for other honorees
when input is publicly solicited by the committee each year, (an honest
and necessary form of "politicking" in my view) the outcome may have
been different.
We must be careful (even through unintended insinuation) in making
statements that imply, as Harold's statement does, that the way to an
Honorary IDRS Membership (and thus the way those listed as Honorary
Members and those who have volunteered on the committees have conducted
themselves) is via "self promotion and knowhow in this field of
politicking for honors".
This is just not the case. Al Goltzer was truly worthy of any honor or
recognition that would have been bestowed on him. I also think, as
Harold implies in his beautiful remarks, that Albert Goltzer was
content with the path he chose as an artist, teacher, friend and
wonderful family man. I wish him eternal peace.
