BEHOLD!
THE ATLANTA BAROQUE ORCHESTRA,
the Southeast's premier period-instrument orchestra,
explores the Roots of the Symphony
in the music of Bach's sons in London & Berlin!
Program:
Johann Christian Bach (1735-1782)
Sinfonietta in A Major, "London" No. 1
Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach (1714-1788)
Sinfonie in G Major, W. 182/1
Sinfonie in B-flat Major, W. 182/2
Johann Christian Bach (1735-1782)
Sinfonietta in D Major, "London" No. 2
Felix Mendelssohn (1809-1847)
Sinfonie No. 12 in G Minor
When we think of the Classical symphony, we think of Vienna - of Haydn and
Mozart and Beethoven. But they are only the first flower of a plant that had
its roots in north Germany and London, where the sons of Bach held sway. If
one had asked Haydn or Mozart about Bach, they would have assumed that either
Johann Christian (the "London" Bach) or Carl Philipp Emmanuel ("Berlin," or
later "Hamburg" Bach) were the composers in question. These, plus the eldest
son Wilhelm Friedemann, shaped the course of the Classical symphony and Haydn
and Mozart recognized them as the foundations upon which they built.
The Atlanta Baroque Orchestra, conducted by its Artistic Director, John Hsu
- for decades acknowledged as an expert in the music of Haydn and his
forerunners - presents a program of music which even today is remarkable for its
elegance and at the same time its startling and mercurial emotionality. Hsu and
the orchestra will be exploring the line of musical development that leads
from the Bach family at the end of the Baroque directly to Mendelssohn (whose
aunt was a student of Wilhelm Friedemann Bach) one of the leaders in the
evolution of the Romantic symphony.
