Dear Sleepy Weekend Lists:
Warning to young double reeders opening the champagne bottles to celebrate
their newly conquered jobs in an orchestra(anywhere in the world): there
also will be days to come without Brahms,Mozart,Schubert,Handel, etc.on your
music stand when you will quote Leonard Bernstein's song cycle : "I hate
music."
This oboist-ehornist -observer has been going thru this phase for the
last few weeks as our orchestra prepares to record a CD/DVD on a phase of
20th century "historic music."
Does anyone out there in musical cyberspace know what it is to get up in
the morning, have breakfast and know that within the next three-four hours
your ears will be assaulted with sounds, screaches and noises which --to my
view of thinking--didn't work thirty years aqgo and have gone out of style
today as "new"' music?
The only "masterpiece" my ears and eyes are beginning to appreciate is
work call "Football (soccer) Music,"which ends with violinists kicking a
soccer ball about and someone screaming "goal"as a percussionist kicks the
ball into the audience.
In any case,a word to wise:prepare yourself for such moments without the
three Bs and their bothers and cousins! How:with other interests outside of
music which will give the same pleasure--almost--that lovely music is
supposed to bring on.
I have gone thru this in the past ,as a musician centuries ago in the
Saarbrucken(Germany) radio orchestra, where one of the works required that
the musicians "play"rocks. But I thought the era had passed!
Today one of our other works of 'music"requires the musicians to
"play"flashlights and crush cans.
Oh well ,,,, this is beginning to sound like the gripes of an old
fuddy-duddy.
A lovely week .....and enjoy the music, when you can!(To think this observer
complained when Rachmaninoff appeared too many times on the season's
schedule--this is the revenge of the G-ds!)

Best wishes,

Harold Emert
