Better not confuse one amazing person with the other - if you read Ron's po=
st again, you will see that Roger Birnstingl was one of the present persons=
- still very much alive - next to our colleague William Waterhouse when he=
passed away. Sure he was an amazing person! And sure that Birnstingl still=
is!=0A=0A=0ACopied from guildmusic.com about our deceased colleague:=0A=0A=
William Waterhouse is one of the world's leading bassoonists, and enjoys a =
varied career as player, teacher and scholar of his instrument. After playi=
ng successively with the Philharmonia, Covent Garden, Italian-Swiss Radio a=
nd London Symphony orchestras, he was for many years co-principal with the =
BBC Symphony. Whilst with them he toured Europe, Russia, USA, China, Japan =
and Australia, working under such legendary conductors as Toscanini, Furtw=
=E4ngler, Monteux, von Karajan and Boulez. =0AAs soloist he has made freque=
nt solo appearances at home and abroad. The eminent composers Jean Fran=E7a=
ix and Gordon Jacob have each dedicated a pair of works to him. He gave the=
first performance in London of Hummel's bassoon concerto. As member of the=
famous Melos Ensemble of London he has recorded the main chamber repertory=
.=0AFor thirty years he taught at the Royal Northern College of Music in Ma=
nchester, where he is now Curator of the Collection of Historic Musical Ins=
truments. Appointments abroad have included guest professorships at Bloomin=
gton, Melbourne and Banff. He has served on the jury of the ARD Musikwettbe=
werb in Munich for the last four occasions in 1965, 1975, 1984 and 1990, as=
well as in Prague, Eindhoven, Markneukirchen, Potsdam and Victoria BC.=0AA=
s scholar of his instrument, he has contributed articles to the New Grove, =
published numerous editions and translations, and is editor of the UE Basso=
on Edition. His important work of reference "The New Langwill Index: a Dict=
ionary of Musical Wind-Instrument Makers & Inventors" was awarded the prest=
igious C.B. Oldman prize for 1993.=0A=0A=0A=0A----- Original Message ----=

irnstingl=0A=0ARIP. I'd never heard of him before Ron's post below. FYI, =
sounds like =0Ahe was an amazing person:=0A=0ARoger Birnstingl (bassoon)=
=0A=0ARoger first took up the bassoon at the age of fourteen in order to fo=
rm =0Aa family trio, later studying with Archie Camden at the Royal College=
of =0AMusic in London. In 1955 he was with the Philharmonia and Herbert vo=
n =0AKarajan touring the United States, (the first of over 20 orchestral =
=0Atours in the US) and since then has been principal bassoonist of the =0A=
London Philharmonic, the Royal Philharmonic and for fourteen years with =0A=
the London Symphony Orchestra. In 1977 he joined the Suisse Romande =0AOr=
chestre. Why go to Switzerland from the LSO? you may ask. Well, the =0Amo=
untains may have something to do with this, and indeed Roger has =0Aclimbed=
some forty 4000 metre peaks and has skied almost the entire =0Alength of t=
he Alps. He is professor of bassoon at the Geneva =0AConservatoire where ov=
er fifty players have passed through his hands, =0Amany of whom are dispers=
ed among world orchestras. He is now retired =0Afrom the Suisse Romande, b=
ut continues to play and teach.=0A=0A=0A> Date: Wed, 07 Nov 2007 17:48:01 +=
