I'd have to say not very far. It can be done to a degree, providing
the opening is flexible enough. But a big opening usually tires out
the embouchure very fast - at least it does mine. However, even
having said that, a small opening if it is very rigid can do exactly
the same. So again it becomes a question of balancing one thing
against another.
