When I was still in High school, I played in a=20
small orchestra that the bassoonist David Van=20
Hoesen's father Carl Van Hoesen who was the=20
conducting professor there used to train his=20
conducting classes at the Eastman School of=20
Music. The elder Van Hoesen was constantly=20
calling for the conducting class students to=20
listen for - and adjust - the balance of=20
instruments. We played all great works by all=20
great composers. So what you are saying here=20
about composers and old instruments is very true.
