By the way, in what piece are you having this problem?

Your story reminds me of when I was rehearsing the 3rd movement of Le
Tombeau de Couperin with an orchestra. It wasn't that the solo oboe couldn't
be heard, but was a matter of achieving a good balance of oboe and strings.
The oboe in that movement should SOAR over the rest of the orchestra,
without sounding pushed and without sacrificing delicacy of nuance. An
oboist has his or her limits as far as this is concerned. The cellos were
killing me and I could get the conductor to cut them back to one player per
stand. Though he was a king of orchestration, I seriously question Ravel's
scoring of this section.
