Sometimes just playing at one's comfort level will alert the conductor (if
he cares to hear your contribution) and he can ask for a little help in the
dynamics of the entire group (who often are grinding, scratching and honkin=
g
away on Oompah that is within their ability). This is a problem (although o=
n
an entirely different plane) even in fine professional groups. Once having
developed a controlled and nuanced sound it is a bummer to have to accede t=
o
the demands of a community "band with string section". Face it, most of us
start in bands, some of us never go further and then we show up in community
orchestras. Then again, not all music is appropriately scored. A lot of
Beethoven's best can benefit from dynamic juggling. Old instruments/new
instruments - I don't know.
