(Two messages in one day from the tropics! Your lucky day)

Dear (Second)List:
Good day...for the record here are some new thoughts of an ag(e)ing
oboist/ehornist after a career spanning two centuries in the musical school
of hard knocks:
(1) Why didn't I notice it before:the English horn job is the best in the
orchestra: Almost everytime you play you are a soloist, don't have to play
all the time, there's time for other interests(composing, playing oboe
concertos,writing, coffee drinking,etc)
So why does everyone want to be first oboe?
(2) Conductors,particularly in this part of the world--Latin America--all
resemble--in the end--dictators from the Woody Allen film "Bananas".The
script and characters change a bit but all end up assuming the throne
portrayed yesterday by Fidel and today by Hugo Chavez.

(3) All orchestra jobs--from Berlin to Oshkosh--eventually end up as similar
experiences:variations on the same old theme ,new characters and new places
but with the same gripes and problems. Every organization will have the same
cast:musical spies,musical police and policewomen, law-and-order musicians
who follow the golden rules and counterpoint, the outlaws who break all the
rules and yet survive

(4)Yesterday's awful and unbearable contemporary music are today's
"classics"'
Grin and bear it!

Have (with a toothpaste smile) a nice day!

Rgds,

Harold Emert
