Hi -
Just last week I performed in a piece with a musical saw. It sounded=20
like a theremin!
The work, however, was for a fairly large "chamber orchestra." It was=20
the "Earthquake" segment of composer Loren Jones' set of pieces that=20
cover the history of San Francisco, the 8th of 10 that have been=20
written so far. I'm not sure if he's completed all the pieces he=20
intends to write for this set yet. We've been performing them as he has=20
been writing them over the last two years at SF Composers Chamber=20
Orchestra. (www.sfcco.org, check "Past Concerts")

Dear List(s):
I am delighted to read herein the insightful e mails of David=20
Weiss,retired
first obost of the LA Phil .Knowing that his hobby is playing the=20
musical
saw, would appreciate any feedback from David or other Listers about=20
whether
there are other works besides one by George Crumb for m=C3=BAsical saw and
chamber music ensemble or double reeds?
I performed the Crumb work(is it recorded?) with the composer present=20
some
time ago and found this unique instrument intriguing,to say the=20
least.Any
other information on the musical saw,its origins, etc would be=20
appreciated.
(Plse don't refer me to some internet site---otherwise I wouldn't make=20
this
query in the first place!)
A lovely Sunday!
Rgds,
