I had the good fortune to play in an orchestra while Pavarotti sang on
numerous occasions:
Trovatore at the Met (unforgettable), and several Pavarotti Plus
concerts televised on PBS (extraordinary).
He was as demanding of the orchestra and conductor as he was of
himself. But he had an ear for beauty and a concept for tone and
shaping a line that were and are unsurpassed. We can all learn from
this and should consider the opportunity to aspire to this level a gift
and not a punishment.
I experienced some of the most memorable moments of my life while in
his presence, either in the orchestra behind him or down in the pit.
The shock wave of the sound of the audience's immediate response gave
one a thump like you'd feel from a bass drum, or felt like a wave
overtaking you at the ocean's edge. It resonated your whole body, as he
stood there, arms outstretched, embracing HIS people.
Once at Avery Fischer Hall during a TV broadcast I was watching a man
a few tiers up on the side near the stage as we played. As Pavarotti
near the climax of "Nessun dorma" the man in the audience was so
transported that I thought he would either leap from his seat or be
swooped up and over the rail.
This kind of power, and to have given so much beauty, excitement and
artistry to the world is superhuman.
Sincerely,
Frank Morelli
