Dear List:
World music--as it is called--seems to be catching on.Yesterday 's e mails
brings in a request from a gringa/American-born oboist living in Europe who
advises me she is coming to the tropics to "study"choro/chorinho.Saw me
tootling choro on the oboe on Utube (I have a CD Öboe in the Choro) and
she'll be flying down to Rio in December.
The American way....!
Imagine a Brazilian double reeder going ot New Orleans to "study"blues and
dixieland!
Makes me wonder if we'll soon be having oboists and bassoonists coming to
Brazil to "study" playing sambas and frevos.
Speaking about these musical forms--many which are derived from stret
parades---Sept. 7 is Independence day in Brazil and your correspondent
/oboist will be participating with the National Orchestra in two concerts of
Brazilian music--including these choros,frevos,sambas and
"classics"(Guarnieri,Siqueira) --in the nation's capital, Brasilia.
If someone had told me when I was growing up ear thoity thoid street near
Herald Square and the red-white and blue that at an advanced age I would be
celebrating musically the independence of Brazil,I would send him or her
immediately to Bellevue.
Cést la vie!
Any feedback--even from my nemesis alter-ego David Metzer--appreciated!
Best wishes,

Harold Emert
Rio-Brazil
