Date: Sun, 19 Aug 2007 22:38:00 -0400

A number of times on the list, the name of David Gowans has been =
mentioned.=A0 I thought I would let those who knew him know that David =
passed away at the age of 89 on July 22, 2007.

He retired from the position of teacher of bassoon (and many other =
things) at Murray State University, Kentucky.=A0 He attended the =
University of Miami (FL) before World War II, where he studied with =
Robert Reinert.=A0 He left school to become principal bassoonist of the =
Havana Symphony Orchestra in Cuba, at a time when Cuba was a very =
different place than it is today.=A0 He then served in the US Army =
during World War II.=A0 Returning to the US, he completed his schooling =
at Wayne State University in Detroit.=A0 While there, he studied briefly =
with Leonard Sharrow, who also had returned from the military and was =
principal bassoon in the Detroit Symphony Orchestra.

David attended several IDRS conferences, and he and his wife, Edna, were =
part of the IDRS tour to Europe in conjunction with the 1984 conference =
in Graz, Austria.=A0 There are many former students and friends of David =
in the double reed world who will be saddened by his passing.
