Dear Kevin,

Praise God you do not perform baroque trumpet.

Janie

Dear List:

Many thanks to all who assisted, both on-list and off, in my recent query
about bass oboes available for rent in the US.

While I'm not pretending to have been an advocate for the use of this
instrument on the level which Jennifer Paull, for example, has been, I have
done my best to convince orchestras in my region to make efforts toward
favoring authenticicy with regard to its use.

What I have found is that the "going rate" is moving ever upward, and doing
so rather quickly, even excessively. The amount that some parties charge has
reached exorbitant levels and is even shameful. Many parties have been
overcome with greed. Regretably, I feel that this is going to lead to them
making less money, rather than more.

Things are grossly out of hand and only top US orchestras will soon be able
or even willing to pay these high prices.

I hope that something will help facilitate a lowering of rates, although I
am not hopeful. There are no orchestras in my region who feel authenticity
is worth $500 (on top of the fee paid to the performer) for a piece of music
that lasts less than an hour, and when few in the audience (other than
musicians) can tell if it's there or not.

I strongly urge all who own one of these instruments in the US for the
purposes of renting out to reconsider charging fees many feel to be
absolutely ridiculous. Get a grip! You've all finished paying for the
instruments ages ago; it's not about paying the thing off.

Apologies for the rant, and many thanks (again) to all who assisted.

Regarding my advocacy for use of bass oboe, I give up.

Respectfully,

Kevin H. Moore
