Baroque oboists have been playing on "broomsticks" for centuries...no
exaggeration here from this end of the classical music industry. ;-)

And then there was the comment a wonderful old repairman and bassoon
maker in Milwaukee by the name of MacGibbon made to me years ago: He
said that flutist William Kincaid would have sounded good playing on
a broomstick! No doubt an exaggeration, but making the same point as
Mark Ortwein, in a way.
