Your remark about dentists has the ring of truth. Judgment of the work of
others must first have established parameters and criteria. Most dentists I
have known (been one since 1968) have larger egos than principal oboes, and
are always ready to criticize the work of colleagues. I detest that
attitude.
I believe you are right that the relationship with your repair tech should
be personal, as is your relationship with your instrument. Many are
competent, but it is necessary to know the player.
My personal belief is that progress (the real thing) is always good.
