Wouldn't a judicious reaming fix the problem? I doubt that the wood
shrinks. I know of good Heckel bassoons that got better with a careful
evaluation and correction of the bore of the boot.
I'm a believer in "use it up, eat it all, and wear it out" and I realize it
is contrary to the lore we have been led to believe.
