New principal has 'nerves of steel'

In any orchestra, principal oboe is one of the marquee jobs. It demands the highest levels of musical expression, technical perfection and solid leadership among the 95 musicians onstage.
Late last week, just after Elizabeth Koch signed a contract as the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra's new principal oboist, she was asked her feelings about taking on such a glamorous and high-stress new gig. "It's awesome! I can finally get my own car."
"The orchestra is very positive and seems so supportive," says Elizabeth Koch, the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra's new principal oboist. Elizabeth Koch says she's "excited for the challenge" with the ASO; her one nagging regret was in quitting school without a degree.
