Subj: [DR-L] Oboe Concerto update
Date: Tue, 15 May 2007 01:46:33 -0400

Hello, Double Reed Players.

Here is an update on the new concerto. I've
already got concerted works for Piano, Harp,
Horn, Clarinet and Viola, but the progress on this
one is going much faster than each of those!

Oboe Concerto
begun on April 16, 2007:
planning 3 movements, to total about 20 minutes

I Allegretto 8' 45"
(completed on May 13, 2007:
the Cadenza is about 1' 30",
217 bars of mostly 4/4 Meter,
for 51 pages of Full C Score,
and 10,368 Notes according to the
Mac Finale Program.)

The mood is sprightly and happy with a lot of
Major Triads and Chromatic Mixolydian Progres-
sions. On May 2nd, I mailed the first 5 minutes of
the Full C Score to our own Nancy Buckman and
her friend, Mr. Kerry Willingham. Now I need to
send them the rest of the First Movement Full C
Score and then make and send the Piano Reduction
Version to them. I hope they, and everyone else,
will like it.=20

The Development Section uses the 2 Main
Themes in Double Counterpoint. I even throw in a
"Changing Meters Fugue" (in honor of Bart=F3k, who
Invented it in 1936), and then added a "Stretto
Fugue in Changing Meters", which might be another
First in History. (If it is, it will be the 14th New
Category of Fugue that I've invented.)

I gave the Viola Section the First Main Theme,
(with the Violins I and II below them), at the
beginning of the movement and again just after the
Cadenza. (As usual, I rarely give the spotlight to the
First Violins, compared to many composers in earlier
centuries.)=20

II Largo: Triple Fugue
(On April 20, 2007, I worked out the details of
these Triple Fugues to have all Three Fugue
Subjects harmonize in Traditional A Minor in
Original, in Inversion (upside-down), in Retro-
grade (backwards), and in Retrograde-Inversion.
I've done these Kinds of Triple Fugues a few
times before, but this will be the first time in
History, that Triple Fugues in These Three other
Directions will appear in any concerto!)

I'm beginning this movement with a Baroque
flavor, using the Harp as a Harpsichord Continuo. I
plan to use more of my atypical modulations, and
other 20th Century devices in the harmony. Being a
Fugue, this will give a few nice Solos to the Lower
Clarinets and Low Brass.

III ?!!! (So far, I have NO idea what I will do in
the Third Movement.)
