George Friderich Handel has been one of the most admired =E2=80=9Cmusician=
=E2=80=99s=20
musicians=E2=80=9D for nearly three hundred years; Beethoven respected and=
studied his=20
works; 20th century composers sometimes used Handel=E2=80=99s music as the=20=
basis for=20
their own (Lukas Foss=E2=80=99 Baroque Variations come to mind), and when J=
oseph Haydn=20
heard performances of Handel=E2=80=99s oratorios in England, he was inspire=
d to write=20
his summative masterworks the Creation and the Seasons. And so, Handel and=
=20
Haydn, different in
temperament and stylistic periods, have been linked since the 18th century =20
(indeed, the oldest active music ensemble in the U.S. is Boston=E2=80=99s Ha=
ndel & =20
Haydn Society, founded in 1815).=20

At its final season concert on Sunday, May 13, the Atlanta Baroque Orchestr=
a=20
under music director John Hsu will present its own take on these=20
not-so-strange bedfellows, although decidedly more heavily balanced towards=
the earlier=20
and more corpulent Handel. The ABO will show off the artistry of the=20
orchestra as it presents three of Handel=E2=80=99s concerti grossi and an o=
rgan concerto,=20
and the short Haydn Missa Brevis Sti. Joannis de Deo, with the Peachtree Ro=
ad=20
United Methodist Church Chamber Singers (Scott Atchison, director, Arietha=20
Lockhart, soprano soloist). =20

Handel=E2=80=99s concerti grossi were very popular during his day and solidl=
y remain=20
so today, judging from concert programs and the number of recordings readil=
y=20
available. What=E2=80=99s different this time around for Atlanta audiences=20=
is live=20
performance on period instruments. These Handel concerti grossi, a staple=20=
of=20
concert programs, serve as a core of the ABO=E2=80=99s repertoire, and will=20=
give=20
Atlantans a chance to compare period musicians doing what they do best with=20=
=20
other performances on modern instruments. Furthermore, Maestro Hsu has cho=
sen to=20
contrast the four concerti, offering one for strings alone, another for=20
strings and oboes, one for flute and strings, and, of course, the organ con=
certo.

There are more treats in store=E2=80=94the Baroque chamber organ used in th=
e Handel=20
Organ Concerto (owned and performed by Daniel Pyle) will give audience=20
members the chance to hear a smaller organ typical of the time, an instrume=
nt quite=20
different in scope than our modern church organs. The Haydn Missa Brevis i=
s=20
a polished gem =E2=80=93 compact in size and sensibility, fittingly perform=
ed by=20
chamber orchestra and chamber choir (unlike the massive performances of Mes=
siah=20
that Haydn experienced=E2=80=94but that Handel did not).

The concert will be held on Sunday, May 13 at 3:00 p.m. at Peachtree Road=20
United Methodist Church, 3180 Peachtree Rd., N.E., Atlanta (in Buckhead). =20
Tickets are available in advance by telephone at 770.537.3974, or at the do=
or, or=20
by mailable online form at www.atlantabaroque.org.
