Dear Harold,
I know that the times have moved from the days when George was in the
Cleveland Orchestra and the men in the orchestra wore jackets and ties
to today where it seems anything goes. Jeans are a typical uniform and
if stage lights are hot, shorts are not unusual. I remember back in the
60ies when Peter Serkin came as a soloist to play with the Minnesota
Orchestra and everyone was appalled that he came to rehearsal in
corduroy jeans and a sweater.
I never heard of a conductor asking musicians to change because he
didn't like the color that they were wearing. . . sigh. . . .
