Harold,

I think there could be something to this. I've been paying a lot of
attention to cane lately, noticing how it feels when splitting, pregouging,
gouging, folding, etc. You can tell a lot about the properties of a piece of
cane before you have a finished reed in your oboe. I think these
observations have the potential to save a whole lot of time.

I just love the sond of tube cane. I keep mine separated into gallon-sized
bags in a bucket underneath my reed table. Whenever I pull out a bag to
select some pieces of cane I like to rattle the pieces around- it's so
musical! It's also fun to shake the box when I get a fresh batch of the
stuff in the mail. There is no other sound like it, not even in a large
percussion section.
