Some have mentioned the use of tranny oil on oboe mechanism. I have used
clock oil on my bassoon keys since Verne Powell recommended it for my wife's
flute back during the Renaissance when we were in Boston. I have used both
Nye clock oil and Dow silicone clock lube, and they both are slick as well
as having a damping effect on the ubiquitous noise of the bassoon hardware.
On the noisier bits where there is no tube, but a cone bearing, I use
silicone lube for fishing reels, as it seems to damp out the noises inherent
in those pieces.
Using a brush dipped in Listerine (or other rinse) will have a good effect
on cleaning the teeth and will leave no residue. Toothpaste is little more
than soap with an abrasive and a foamer in it.
