Sao Paulo--Just in time for Easter, Brazil's most important Rabbi--who was
arrested last month in Palm Beach ,Florida for shoplifting ties worth about
700 dollars--says he will "ask for pardon from the Pope and at the same time
the God of Abraham,Isaac and Jacob."
Rabbi Henry Sobel,63,an American citizen born in Lisbon but who has been
Brazil's leading Jewish leader for the last 35 years, is "recovering"in Sao
Paulo's most luxurious hospital Albert Einstein, from a an alleged mixture
of drugs and medicines which he claims caused him to convert from man of God
to a shoplifter.
He told the Estado of Sao Paulo newspaper: "Despite what I
involutanarily and inexplicably did, I have been invited to meet with the
Pope during his upcoming visit to Brazil. I intend in his presence to tell
him--if I have the opportunity--my story and I am absolutely certain that he
will pardon me.And to ask the Pope'pardon,I am requesting simultaneously the
pardon of the God of the Profests and People of Israel and my friends who
have suffered with me."
Sobel,who is due to appear in a Palm Beach court 23 April and could
face up to 4 years in jail,was caught by spy cameras in various high price
shops in that American city and at first denied he had shoplifted the ties.
He earns a reported salary of 25,ooo dollars Sao Paulo,where he has request
a temporary leave from his post as President of the local Jewish Centre.
