These below may be April Fool and knowingly silly things, but I actually
have an encyclopedia from about 1830 which includes in its definition of
the Contrabassoon: "This instrument is no longer used, its place in the
orchestra having been entirely supplanted by the Serpent."

Unfortunately, I don't know what it might have to say about the oboe - I
only have the first four volumes!
