Subj: [DR-L] Kodaly and Grieg dances for oboe
Date: Sun, 11 Mar 2007 14:07:30 -0400

Dear List:
Has anyone out there in double reed cyberspace played either Kodaly's
Galanta Dances and Grieg's Symphonic Dances?
We performed both works on our program this morning to begin the new season
of Brazil's National Orchestra and I asked the guest Maestro Berislav
Skenderovick, of Croacia, if he had virtuoso oboists in his orchestra.
He must have beause both works are difficult in their own way for the oboe
and other instrumentalists.
This was my second time performing the Kodaly and I always wonder why the
double tonguing excerpts are not on the audition repertoire with Rossini's
Scala di Sieta.(begiinning the program with this opus by Kodaly is even more
difficult than ending the program with it.)
Have played the Rachmaninoff Dances but the Grieg is/was new to me.There is
an arrangement of some of the Norqegian's lovely songs for oboe and piano,ly
recommend ot Listers.
Our program also included Stamitzes Bb concerto for basson and
clarinet, another "new"worjk to these ears. Anyone performing it out
there.(Our soloists included veteran French-Brazilian bassoonist Noel
Devos, for whom the Mignone Valsas were composed).
Any feedback always appreciated....
I am returning to online activities after a death in the family which
brought me briefly back to the old country of NY(Long Island) and would
highly recommend skype especially to the older fogies on this List for
keeping up with two places at once. (Is anyone using Skype with webcan for
rehearsing when no one can make the times scheduled?)

Best wishes,

Harold Emert
