For oboe I don't see a problem with stainless steel nails used as pins but
for bassoon there are different theories on what to do. I use the nail
method. Four across & 10 to 15 deep. I have 5 racks in an open wood frame.
They slide in and out like draws and that holds 300. Each tray is 4.25"
wide 12.5" long. For stacking if you want to include contrabassoon the
clearance above the rack should be 3.75" to 4 inches. Some prefer to have
multiple holes drilled in a piece of wood for a mandrel to be inserted and
to have the mandrel match the bassoon bocal taper. This gives a perfect
reamerless solution to tube forming. The reed dries with a perfect form.
If you husband is handy with a metal lathe and aluminum a #3 tapered pin is
perfect for a Heckel bocal. An added taper for the throat is needed. I
perfer making an oval in the small taper for the throat. I sometimes don't
round all my reeds and like to stop when the reed is sounding good. If you
want a pictrue of my rack I can email it to you personally. I can also
provide measurements in thousandths of an inch for the mandrel. But that's
for the very fussy. Lawrence Rhodes......
