Since I use a microtorch a lot, I have gotten very proficient with glue
gun stix- I had to splice a good headphone cord onto the headphones, and
my method is to solder, then wrap with thread for strength, and then
coat it with hot melt glue- a gun puts out too small of an amount; I
twirl a glue stick in a minitorch flame to the point of it dropping as a
fluid, then keep twirling it and apply where you want. If bassoon reeds
need a "gripping turban" I suppose it could be done by twirling the reed
in a bead of melted glue stick. Craft stores sell a heated well in
which one can put in glue sticks cut up; it melts and you can brush it
on like a hot wax.
Home Depot sells brush on tool insulation rubber that comes in a can
and about 3 colors. Me. for oboe reed tying, I use nail polish over the
threads where they cover the cane.
Re acetone: In another lifetime I was an electron microscopist and
acetone is used in a final solvent series for embedding aqeuous tissues
into a plastic resin- it indeed is a universal solvent, as it mixes with
both water and hydrocarbons. Keith, what do they use now for processing
tissues? Unfortunately it takes the water out of your fingers (why they
turn white), and with enough exposure to this and other nasties like
methyl ethyl ketone (paint remover), tolulene, benzene, and xylene, can
cause a "work induced psoriasis" where the skin thickens and cracks- I
had this for months; I stopped all use of solvents (used a lot in auto
repairs/cleaning) on my fingertips and now they are fine. I hate gloves
(and even the nitriles don't last long) and am now letting a mechanic
rebuild my VW bus engine.
