Subj: [DR-L] The Atlanta Baroque Orchestra Celebrates Buxtehude

Dear List,
The Atlanta Baroque Orchestra offers its 4th concert of the season at 3:p.m.
on Sunday, March 11 in the Peachtree Road United Methodist Church chapel.
Dr. Daniel Pyle (Eastman), ABO Resident Director, will orchestrate the works
by Dieterich Buxtehude from the harpsichord, honoring the 300th anniversary
of the composer's death.
Although Buxtehude is primarily remembered for his organ compositions, this
concert will feature a plaintive group of 7 cantatas for 5 voices entitled
"Membra Jesu Nostri." The seven sections together comprise a passion
meditation on the body of the Lord Jesus Christ as he is crucified. The seven parts
are titled, "To the Feet, To the Knees, To the Hands, To the Side, To the
Chest, To the Heart and To the Face." The texts are largely drawn from a well
known medieval poem, "Salve Mundi Salutare," and interspersed with scripture
from the Latin Vulgate Bible.
Dr. Pyle, who has performed within the Atlanta early music scene for nearly
15 years, announces that this concert will be a premiere of the work in
Atlanta! Don your fancy jeans and your feather boa...abandon the wig! He has
assembled a choir of superb soloists well known on the early music stage...
Lelia Lazenby and Judith Overcash, sopranos I and II; Holly McCarren, alto;
Bruce Sellers, tenor; and Brent Davis, bass.
To round out the program, the ABO will feature two additional Buxtehude
sonatas for violins, viola da gamba and bass/basso continuo. There is also a
good chance you will be treated to a small organ piece with Pyle at the
portative organ. :-)
