This quote reminds me of the time my stomach turned and I could no
longer watch football. Another 49 running back, not Roger, but John (I
can't recall the last name) was playing despite the doctors declaring
that basically he had no more cartilege in his knees. What an idiot!
And I was disgusted with the team that would play a man in this
condition, or a sport or society that would encourage a person to do so
much damage to their body. For what?

I'll consider watching the game again when the players show some sense
and their union bans concrete/astroturf surfaces. Ha. You'd think
they'd have the sense to insists on playing on real dirt and turf, as
it does so much less damage to the body.

While trying to tackle San Francisco 49ers running back Roger Craig
during
Super Bowl XXIII (on January 22, 1989), Cincinnati Bengals nose tackle
Tim
Krumrie had his left leg snapped like a breadstick, his tibia and
fibula
shattered in three places. Coach Sam Wyche ran over from the
sidelines. His
first
words to his injured player? "Get up, Timmy!"

[The Aftermath? The 49ers won the game (20-16) with 34 seconds on the
clock;
Krumrie returned the next season - with a 15-inch titanium rod in his
leg.]

-Sam Wyche (1945) former American NFL coach
