Most of the repair manuals have a chapter on moisture absorption and
bore shrinkage. You can also Google some very detailed descriptions of
this process on the Internet.
I've accepted the Sawicki approach and started swabbing more frequently
to slow moisture absorption in the bore. Frequent swabbing also almost
entirely cures the problem of water blocking the tone holes.
David Teitelbaum has convinced me that oiling the bore makes the wood
soggy and causes the tone to deteriorate. Waxing the bore is better, but
I'm not doing this either (Teitelbaum/Laubin treats the bores with
carnuba wax to slow moisture absorption). I'm just frequently swabbing,
and it seems to work fine.
