As far as the Lorees are concerned, newer is better--the Lorees just get
better and better. Loree has improved their oboes a lot over the years.
Also the wooden bore hasn't had time to absorb moisture and shrink.
Fortunately, this shrinkage process takes a long time.
Other problems with older oboes is that they are often allowed to dry
out, and so, crack. It's often hard for a player to spot all of the
cracks in an oboe. Just the other day Margaret Noble found a beginning
crack in the facing of the top trill key and patched it. You couldn't
even see this crack unless you took the trill key off.
