Subj: [DR-L] Old oboes --- was :Age of my English Horn

I heard alot of people over here saying that an old wooden instrument
is more valuable, expensive and sound alot better simply because the
wood is old. This was said about clarinets from a clarinet player. I
told the guy maybe thats true since I knew nothing about clarinets but
old "blown out"oboes are not expensive and wont play as good as a new
good oboe. Am I right?

The same thing i hear about the Oud, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oud
. The older the oud ( wood) the better the sound. From what i
understood the wood of the oud sounds better if it's been played for
years. I dont know, is it something with the physic of the wood and
the tones resonating thru it all these years?

When I first received my brand new oboe I took it out of the case, put
it together and it played like a dream. Two days later and after my
oboe sniffed the hot dry air of the desert that lovely dream turned to
a nightmare.

Old is gold for sure but hey, I look horrible in it!!
