Garrison Keillor is not an instrumentalist, but has done a lot of work and
study to improve his singing since he began broadcasting. He has always
been a fan and an admirer of instrumental players, both in the concert mode
(Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra and Minnesota Orchestra) and in the various
bluegrass, country, and soul genres that he features on his weekly radio
show. The "Guide" was originally written, I think, for one of the many
fund-raisor events in which Garrison participates, which explains the
affection and respect that underly his humor in the piece.

His wife, if I'm not mistaken, is a violist, which may explain a lot. Or
not.

Dennis,
I have played that piece by Keilor on two occasions. Both were in situations
where we usually play to the usual serious and attentive audiences. In each
case, the predominant sound (often to our discomfiture) was that of laughter
and a genuine appreciation for Keilor's wit and non coruscating humor. I
believe that he, too, is a musician; possibly a bassoonist. In any case, I
don't think he has done any damage to the future of our vocations or
avocations, and I suspect he may have helped to "grow" the audience.
I'm not an advocate of making a fool of oneself in order to ingratiate
himself with an audience. In fact I have always felt that Captain Kangaroo
debased himself in that "pratfall" humor he provided for kids. Consider the
contrast with Mr. Rogers. I do believe, however, that there is enough
dignity left in Keilor's piece to obviate any chance of that extreme.
