Hi Phil,
I experienced the sore throat when practicing double-tonguing at first.
Give it a few days off, then practice in shorter spurts. I used the Arban
trumpet book exercises so I didn't have to invent any. While practicing DT,
my single tonguing got significantly faster and that seems to be a lasting
side benefit. I'll take it!
