Doublereed Archive - Posting 000052.txt from 2007/01
From: Jon Julian <jon@-----.com> Subj: [DR-L] just one more thing... Date: Thu, 04 Jan 2007 23:14:41 -0500
I think the "please excuse" thread has blown over by now and that is
probably just as well, and I certainly don't want to re-ignite
anything, but there was a phrase passed back and forth that I often see
or hear being used in what ends up being a kind of derogatory way to
people who do hold certain beliefs or a certain amount of belief - I
wanted to check things through and not just speak off the top of my
head, so have consulted eight English and one German Bible, from
American, English, German, international, Catholic, Protestant, 1611 to
1975 translations, and the wording is virtually identical - whether you
are on the absolute mythology end of the biblical credibility spectrum
or the absolute truth end of the spectrum or wherever you fit in
between those poles, it is important for clarity of thinking to note
that the tree in question was not the "Tree of Knowledge" - it was the
"Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil" - 100 theologians or philosophers
would probably come up with at least 150 opinions about just what that
means - sort of like a discussion of how to make reeds - but that is
what is set forth and there is a difference in the two propositions,
however much you may read into (or not) just what the implications are.
Man was never supposed to be ignorant - note that in nearby verses we
are set the task of naming the animals - a task we are still engaged in
as we discover new or at least undiscovered or forgotten, species.
Thanks for your ear
Jon Julian
