From: morbassoon@-----.com Subj: [DR-L] Zelenka and Telemann Date: Tue, 02 Jan 2007 07:20:10 -0500
In response to Mr. Veith's question concerning Zelenka and Telemann, I
add the following:
In one of Telemann's publication, "Der Getreue Musikmeister", he
published mostly his own music, but also the works of other composers,
such as those mentioned in Grove's: "J.S. Bach, Zelenka, Pisendel,
Weiss and other leading musicians." Pisendel was also a fine violinist.
In notes I prepared to accompany my CD "Baroque Fireworks" I learned
the following: Zelenka was likely part of an ensemble accompanying his
employer, the Electoral Prince, on a visit to Venice in 1716.
Zelenka's colleague in this group, the violinist Georg Pisendel,
studied with Vivaldi during this trip and Zelenka could have had
personal contact with the Italian master. Later Zelenka did travel to
Vienna where he studied with the Imperial Kapellmeister, Johann Joseph
Fux. It is certain that Zelenka knew Telemann personally, and each
enjoyed the friendship and admiration of Johann Sebastian Bach. Like
Bach, Telemann valued Zelenka's compositions and even included
Zelenka's work in his own publication. Hope this helps.

Mr. Veith had written in the previous double reed:
thank you very much for your very detailed and thought-provoking post.
Please forgive me that I react only to a quite small section of it as
quoted
below. Some time ago I have done a project with the studio XVII Augsburg
consisting of two Zelenka quattros (the first and the sixth) combined
with
some Telemann music. We chose this combination because of the
antagonisms
involved: Telemann's extreme economical mastery of composition and his
great
success with his contemporaries while often being belitteled in our time
versus Zelenka's excessive and manaical disregard of any practical
aspects
and his astounding lack of success during his lifetime in spite of his
overwhelming genius while nevertheless acheiving posthumous fame today.
In
preparing for this programm I have done some reading, of course. But I
have
not learned anything about any personal relationship whatsoever between
the
two composers. Therefore I would be very grateful if you could
elaborate a
little more about the quoted remark of yours.
Thank you very much in advance and a happy New Year to you and to all
the
