Hello all,
On my setup (I have a Fox 601 with a CTC bocal) I don't seem to need the
whisper key for the high g and I use the high D key to vent the c. It's
safer because one is less prone to hit 2 keys at once.
When I'm looking for a projecting sound on that middle c I often will use
the high d key to vent. Another good place for that is in the place with
the 32nd (or were they 64ths) runs up to high A. It's where the violas have
the same passage earlier in Act 1. Anyway, there are a lot of accented c's
where I like the bigger sound of the D vent key, vs. the c vent key.
Happy Nutcrackering!
Larry

Subject: [DR-L] BASSOON: question about Nutcracker Bsn 1 part
Hi, everyone:
I've got a question about our favorite piece, The Nutcracker. One
annoying passage (of many), is at near the end of Waltz of the
Snowflakes (the end of Act I). At the final Presto section, in 2/4
there is a difficult slur from high G down to Middle C (the actual
passage is: eighth rest, G-sixteenth down to C-sixteenth, back up to
eighth-G, then another G sixteenth down to C-sixteenth and finally
back up to G-eighth). The C is difficult to sound cleanly with the
tempo. Nothing seems to work 100%, even after practicing this a few
hundred times over the years. The best I can do is apply the lock
and "aim" my air for the C; the 1st slur seems to come out but the
next one is hit or miss.
Anyone out there have the definitive answer? And how 'bout those
trills....(I've got a good solution to that if anyone wants to write
me privately; no, it's not "tacet"!)...
