Dear Richard (et al) I have just tested this passage on my new Takeda
bassoon - It works even better than it did for 33 years in my orchestra,
Canada's National Arts Centre Orch.. Firstly I used my small finger whisper
key to hold the whisper key closed. Then, for each c3 down slur from the
normal high g3, I open the high c" key fully for the time of that note. Also
(!) I do not use any finger for left hand index for the g3's ! This aids the
quick acoustic legato required by Tchaikovsky.
If you write to me privately I will tell you how to get a copy of my book
"Bassoon Trills, Shakes and Skills" that includes all my workouts for the
Nutcracker-bassoon I. Good luck! Sincerely, Gerald Corey, Ottawa
