Dear List:
I find myself back in the ww quintet world this week and enjoying it. For an
oboist-composer who has dedicated most of his chamber music activity to the
repertoire for oboe-piano or oboe-flute,,oboe and bassoon, this is a novelty
and in this field I am a relative novice.
In my past and now present experience, the biggest problem in playing ww
quintets is getting five people to rehearse at the same time.Perhaps this is
why I've avoided he literature so many years?
On the other hand ,re-playing the Ibert and Danzi quintets and looking
forward to re-playing Barber's lovely "Summer Music" or the Hindemith, are
very agreeable experiences.
Queries :Are the any books/articles wrtitten by ww quintet members based on
thir expereriences. One can only imagine that the experience can be likened
to be part of a string quartet--of which I've read, four touring string
players usually ask for four separate rooms on different floors, because they
don't speak to each other.(But does it have to come to this point?)
Secondly, who is the leader of the ww quintet? Predictable answer:the
flautist (but they always think they are the leaders, conductors because they
have the top voice).
From this perch of being the oldest player in the quintet, I begin
aleady to see the pitfalls of such an ensemble:the desire to perform too
many pieces on one program for five when the listener's ears would be better
appeased by a few quintets and a trio or two.or even a solo piece. The
positive points are improving your orchestra's ww section and without the
loud string section,to hear oneself playing without forcing. (I find the wws
today much better in tune than I remember then say 30 years ago.Better tuned
instruments---or players?)
Excessive criticism of any player will only result in negative
results.
Final query:where today is the least inexpensive ($$) source of
material for ww quintets?
Best,
Harold emert
Rio-Brazil
While we're on this topic a more detailed biodata on Danzi would be
appreciated. And who played these virtuoso works???
