I tried that cane a few years ago and liked it a lot.

Contrary to the way most people tie their reeds, I always tie mine
just down to where the cane ends, and stop right there. I can't see
any good reason to tie any further. For some strange reason this
bothers a lot of people, who act as though showing the bare metal of
the staple below the thread is tantamount to a woman showing a broad
expanse of bare naked flesh above the stockings on her thigh.
