Subj: [DR-L] Peter Kolkay Recital at Symphony Space
Date: Fri, 01 Dec 2006 08:24:30 -0500

I had the real pleasure of once again hearing
bassoonist Peter Kolkay in NYC, last night (11/30).
He and Christina Jennings (flute) performed 20th/21st
Century music at the Leonard Nimoy (Thalia) Theater,
part of Symphony Space; this was presented by Concert
Artists Guild. I recently heard Peter in concert with
the Lincoln Center Chamber Music Society Players (II)
concert, which featured him and oboist Steve Taylor in
a performance of Poulenc's "Trio."

Peter and Christina began the concert with
Villa-Lobos' "Bachianas Brasilieras No. 6" - they
really captured the chanteuse feel of the 1st mvt, and
the "jungle" feel of the Fantasia. Christina was a
terrific collaborator and soloist on her own, with
solo flute pieces by Laura Schwendinger and Toru
Takemitsu.

Peter was featured in solo works, including David
Lang's "Press Release," which was a tour-de-force
performance - a very vibrant LOW register, with major
leaps to the highest registers - this piece was
originally written for bass clarinet and Peter played
the alternate version for bassoon. Lang wanted the
instrument to pop back and forth (constantly for quite
a while!) between the lowest (James Brown inspired!)
funky bass and the highest register. Although the
constant back & forth of the low/high popping began to
irritate a bit, Peter really nailed this work - I
wonder if he had to retire his reed after such a major
undertaking. (Can't imagine all the reeds he must
have gone through, just practicing for such a piece!)

The highlight of the concert for me was Paul Moravec's
"Andy Warhol Sez: for bassoon and piano." The composer
was on hand to share about the piece, which he wrote
for David Sogg, who premiered it at the Warhol Museum
in Pittsburgh in 2005. The piece is in 7 short
movements, each preceded by an Andy Warhol quote, read
aloud by Peter - then the "quote" was musically
interpreted. Very musical, colorful piece - Alexandra
Nguyen provided the piano accompaniment.

The concert ended with a nice, fluffy "Trio" by Chick
Corea, involving his initial efforts at free
improvisation, when he was a pianist in the Miles
Davis' group - he writes out all the flute improv. All
in all, a really wonderful concert of very new music,
with the classic Villa-Lobos in tow! Happy Holidaze - Jim
