Subj: [DR-L] tuners and drugs

Dear List:
" He loved or used to love playing with the only community orchestra in
town not because of the quality of music made but due to the rare
repertoire, nice people and opportunity to be a soloist and composer/arranger
occasionally. The only problem with this group of many "veterans"-- who
began music before the tuning machine was invented-- was ...intonation.
"So he decided to take things into his own hands,Change the world,be a
revolutionary. He would donate a tuning machine he didn't need because his
newest machine not only had a tuner but a metronome.
"The rehearsals continued for 'Hercules' a lovely Handel 'Oratorio' which
has some lovely moments at the end for two oboes. Due to commitments with
the so-called professional orchestra in town ,he had to miss rehearsals with
the community orchestra but his tuning machine was there and that should
resolve things,' he mused"
Returning to rehearsal with the longest-running chamber orchestra in
town, the concertmaster came to his stand and asked for the A.
"But where is my tuner--the one I donated to the orchestra?
"After much scuffling and looking about the tuner was discovered. It didn't
work --the batteries were dead."
"In a huff he took his donated tuner back."

Query:(1)Should he buy batteries for the tuner and return his donation?
or
(2)Should he retain his donated tuner and forget about changing the world?

You decide.

Best wishes,

Harold Emert
Rio-Brazil

PS--After all the eulogies for the Sao Paulo orchestra currently on tour
of the US,today's newspapers report that "two musicians in the Sao Paulo
State orchestra have been detained in Miami for the use of drugs . The
orchestra plans as well to take it's own disciplinary measures."
That's progress!(or reacting to playing wqith
stress,tyranny,pressure,etc?)
