Standardized? The bassoon? International pitch? Hah!
My many Fox bocals supposedly correspond numerically to Heckel bocals of one
lower number. Eg, a Fox #2 = Heckel #1. But then, I have never believed
that the darned things were consistent anyway. My prewar Heckel bocals #1
and #2 play at the same pitch. My Heckel #0 is just lousy at any pitch. On
my Heckel 9K all bocals are flat!
Actually, a more important question would be which bocal is the pipe used by
the factory to adjust the final tuning of the instrument. My understanding
is that Heckel used to use the #1 to make his instrument in judicious tune
at 440Hz. Now, who knows? Everyone plays at whatever pitch he thinks is
appropriate.
