The second issue - the art of reading reviews - needs work also. When I
read a review of anything, I always check to see if I can find out about
the biases and knowledge of the reviewer. If I cannot, then I look at the
review without automatically assuming I would agree. I gather that in
Montreal here, we have newspaper reviewers who have been at it awhile, who
most of the concert-going public know about, and who have clearly stated
their own preferences.
I also know my own likes, and how to decode a review to decide whether to
see the show: I have lousy taste in movies. When I see a review damning a
film as simple-minded fluff, I know I'll have a great time!
