I didn't see the message that generated this but I understood this was
the average number of hours practiced by typical violinists in major
symphonies before they were hired (not world class players). I have
assumed that this was generally over a 10 year period.

I believe that clarinetist Richard Stoltzman did his 10,000 hours in a
period of about 4 years.
